APPLICATION OVERVIEW

Expandable graphite for fire protection

Expandable graphite acts as an intumescent additive. When heated, it expands into a carbon layer that can help limit heat transfer. Grade selection must suit the material system and its processing temperature.

Intumescent action

Expansion creates a protective carbon structure.

Thermal barrier

The expanded layer can help reduce heat transfer.

Formulation flexibility

Consider use in foams, polymers, coatings and seals.

TECHNICAL FOCUS

Expansion behaviour matters

Select for both processing and fire exposure.

The onset of expansion needs to be considered against the processing window. Expansion results also depend on the test conditions; compare grades using the same method.

Expansion onset Match the grade to the processing temperature.
Expansion volume Compare results at a stated temperature and method.
Particle size & carbon Review the size and purity needed by the formulation.
Chemical compatibility Discuss pH, sulfur and other formulation-sensitive limits.
MATERIAL SELECTION

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Before you select a grade

Practical questions to help make your requirements clear.

Can regular flake graphite replace expandable graphite?

Regular flake graphite does not provide the same engineered expansion behaviour. Select the material according to the intended function.

Does the additive alone determine the fire rating?

Fire performance depends on the finished formulation, product construction and applicable test. The graphite grade alone does not establish a rating.
