APPLICATION OVERVIEW

Graphite for metal processing

From carbon addition to mould coatings and sintered parts, graphite serves different roles in metal processing. The right material starts with the process, the metal and the required carbon balance.

TECHNICAL FOCUS

Powder Metallurgy

A dedicated selection route for sintered components.

Graphite can supply carbon during sintering and provide lubrication during compaction. Its particle characteristics need to suit the metal powder and the required part properties.

Carbon & purity Match the carbon balance and impurity limits.
Particle characteristics Review size distribution, shape and mixing behaviour.
Processing conditions State the metal powder, pressing and sintering route.
Part requirements Check dimensions and properties in the finished part.
MATERIAL SELECTION

Start with the right graphite

Discuss the material family together with your specification and operating conditions.

Material family Application starting point What to confirm
Graphite recarburizers APPLICATION STARTING POINTCarbon addition in metal melts WHAT TO CONFIRMCarbon, sulfur, ash and addition method
Natural flake graphite APPLICATION STARTING POINTStarting material for foundry coating formulations WHAT TO CONFIRMFlake size, purity and formulation compatibility
Micronized graphite APPLICATION STARTING POINTFine graphite for metal powder blends WHAT TO CONFIRMParticle distribution, purity and mixing requirements
Material families are starting points for discussion. Confirm the grade specification and evaluate suitability in your application.
TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Before you select a grade

Practical questions to help make your requirements clear.

Do melting and powder metallurgy use the same graphite?

They have different selection priorities. Melt additions depend on carbon input and dissolution; powder metallurgy also requires attention to particle characteristics and distribution in the blend.

How should I specify graphite for a foundry coating?

Share the coating medium, application method, metal and surface requirements, together with the target particle distribution and purity.

What information helps with a powder metallurgy inquiry?

Include the metal powder system, desired carbon level, graphite size requirements and sintering conditions. A current specification or reference sample is useful.
